Fall in the Midwest is such a beautiful place to see the colors change, and provides the unique opportunity to replicate them inside the home. Harvest colors and smells give such a warm, cozy feeling that you almost can’t help surrounding yourself in the season.
One simple way to decorate for fall is to literally bring the outdoors inside. Leaves, twigs, and branches taken from your yard easily transition your space to fall. Artificial decorations like gourds, pumpkins, and wreaths can all be purchased and are

guaranteed to last year after year. Linens, table runners, napkins, and even hand towels add a layered dimension to the more obvious decorations. Scented candles are another great way to spread yummy seasonal scents throughout your house.
Changing out your pillows or throw rugs to autumnal colors is another easy way to keep up with the season. If you are going to decorate the inside of your house, make sure to add a little something to your entryway or porch. As the entrance to your home, this space should reflect what’s inside. If you’ve taken the time to decorate your home don’t overlook the less obvious areas such as the front entrance way.
With so many options available in decorating there is a tendency to either go overboard or not attempt the transition at all. Remember, when finding a balance, a few simple elements can stand on their own and make a strong statement. Leaving space around a decoration can make a greater impact than mounds of leaves, pumpkins, and scarecrows on every surface. If you’re in doubt, our lovely designer Ruth Ann believes, “Baking some pumpkin cookies isn’t a bad idea.” I think she’s on to something.
