April showers bring May flowers and I hope increasingly warm temperatures. The past few months of winter has probably left your home feeling dark and heavy and you’re itching to transition your space to spring. This season is characterized by energy, new growth, and budding plants that your home can capture with light and colorful accessories. The best part is that it’s probably easier than you think to achieve a sunny look. Through mirroring outdoor elements, you can instantly makeover your house. The key is to be aware of bright colors, linear shapes, and breezy fabrics.
Beginning with a simple sofa, the first step to bring in spring is to change your pillows. Look for a mix of colors and interesting textures. Our talented designer Laura began this makeover with two pink pillows. From there she immediately headed to our fabrics room and selected a beautiful floral and tribal print in order to customize two more. In addition to noting the complimenting colors, Laura paid careful attention to the weight of the fabrics. Light fabrics such as cotton and linen are best for summer because they not only feel brighter but will also keep you cool in hot temperatures as opposed to bulky velvets and brocades. Susan then decided to add a few art pieces as an easy way to liven the vignette and transform the flat space behind the sofa. Seasonal art doesn’t have to be limited to flowers or lakeside scenes; a mirror is another great option that will reflect and magnify the existing light of the room.

The second step in upgrading to spring is to accessorize. Laura decided to create a fun mix of artful vases and décor while seizing the opportunity to add a second, complimenting layer of color and shape. Staggering the height and space of the accessories is reminiscent of how things naturally grow in the wild, which makes for a better design that is esthetically pleasing when translated to interiors. Moreover, using actual plants is one of the best accents by which to infuse the room with the outdoors. For the finishing touch in this transformation Laura grabbed a rug that would bring together the whole look. The final step polishes off this cheerful room, taking it from dull and flat to fresh and vibrant. As mentioned in previous posts, the best way to make this (or any) look work, is to not be afraid of mixing different colors and textures. It may seem counter-intuitive, but we promise the result will be a well-balanced composition.
