Shabby Chic, french country, vintage farmhouse -today’s design style goes by many names. Although Shabby Chic looks best when it follows certain guidelines (outlined below), remember that the esthetic is whimsical and charming and can’t always be contained in four easy tips. However, by following our rules you will be closer to this super popular, super pretty style.
1.) Make the largest furniture in the room white; that means white bedding or a white slipcover for

the living room sofa. Opt for a textured fabric (wrinkles are okay) or add ruffles to steer away from modern lines that could detract from the cozy vibe.
2.) Add a few pieces of distressed wood in the form of a hutch or coffee table.

Bonus points if its a pastel color. Keeping the feel undone and and not too purposeful, distressed wood instantly makes the room look, well, lived in.
3.) Add in baroque period items for a touch of sophistication. While Shabby Chic is free and easy, we don’t wan’t your space to look dirty or rundown. There is a balancing act between the “shabby” elements and the “chic” elements. Neither should overpower the other, and by adding ornate and beautiful accessories to the room it will compliment the historic charm of distressed wood and ruffled pillows.
4.) Mind your textures. Floral prints, herringbone patterns, natural fabrics, and metal bed frames are

all hallmarks of the Shabby Chic look. Nothing is too matchy-matchy, but blends together in pastel tones and cozy fabrics for a bright and airy space.
While these tips are the starting point for any good Shabby Chic- inspired room, always remember the key is to balance elements that are intentionally shabby and intentionally chic. The sophistication of well-loved items are, after all, what makes a house a home.
