Your Guide to Leather

If you’re like a lot of people who come into the store, you may have a few questions about leather. Sauder Furniture is committed to keeping our clients informed about their options, and picking the right quality leather furniture can be difficult. With different terms such as “genuine”, “bonded”, and “grain” -what does that means for the quality of leather furniture you are purchasing? Here’s a quick guide to leather labels:

Genuine Leather- the lowest quality leather that is created by lower grade leathers bonded together. It is okay to buy something that is genuine leather if you don’t expect to use it for very long or care about the quality.

Top-grain leather- this is a medium quality leather, meaning it’s not the most durable or long-lasting leather on the market. Top-grain leather is created by sanding and treating leather to get rid of naturally occurring imperfections in the leather. This leather has a lower quality finish and will not age well.

Full-grain leather- is the highest quality leather. It comes untreated and is the most tough, durable quality of leather. If you are going to invest in a piece of furniture that gets a lot of use and you want to last a long time, full-grain leather is the way to go.

Other leathers, like bonded, patent, and corrected grain, should be avoided because of their poor quality and treated finishes, which make them a cheap alternative to real leather. When making an important purchase, like a sofa or chair, remember that Sauder Furniture’s experts are here to help you select the best piece for your home.
