Mixing chairs at the dining room table is becoming a popular trend. In interior design we call this transitional style, meaning a blend of traditional and contemporary design. I personally love this look. It adds character to a room and, if done well, can achieve a, “I just threw this together without trying and it looks fabulous” esthetic.
So how do you get this look? Finding the right balance of hodge podge and put together can be tricky, but it ultimately comes down to style. Color, fabrics, and finishes are secondary to the overall style of your dining room. For example, if you had two white wooden chairs but one was ultra-modern and the the other was decorative vintage they would not mix well. Taking extreme styles and trying to blend them won’t get you very far.
Take a minute to consider what you want your dining room to be. Modern? Coastal? Retro? Once you have established a style, think of mixing textures. For example, wood and linen chairs work really well together. Next, consider color. The designers at Sauder Furniture are not afraid of embracing color, and chairs are a great way to incorporate color into a traditionally bland space. However, if color is not your thing, you can never go wrong by mixing neutrals. Still stuck? Stop my Sauder Furniture to ask our designers how to create your own mismatched dining set.
