Have you ever walked into a room and felt overwhelmed? Has there been a space in your home that didn’t have the “pop” of excitement you were hoping to achieve? It’s possible that the rhythm and harmony is off. As a designer, we can help you distinguish the problem areas and how to fix them. Have you ever walked into a room and felt restful and excited at the same time? That is probably due to the room having great rhythm and harmony. When mixing the two principles together, it creates a cohesive look that allows your eye to flow seamlessly across the room. It gives you a sense of unity and everything works together to create a beautiful surrounding.

To paraphrase the definition of rhythm, we can say that it’s about creating patterns of repetition and contrast to create visual interest. An example of this would be shown in this room where you see the repetition of the teal color that is pulled from the artwork across the room into the pillows, vase, ottoman, and a muted version in the window treatments. The light and dark gray on the floor and sofa add the right amount of contrast to keep your interest and make you feel excited.

To counter that excitement, there’s harmony. In interior design, harmony creates a sense of restfulness. Often, it is using a monotone color palate but choking it full of texture and a variety of shapes to incorporate visual interest. Harmony helps create a cohesive, calming room. The photograph above creates harmony by using a gray tone on the wall and gray stone on the fireplace. The one below displays harmony by using the same tone of dark brown throughout the room in the upholstery and case goods and using matching light fixtures.

As a designer, we like to mix rhythm and harmony to add variety to your home. Consider this; You have a rug that features a gorgeous dark grey color. To create rhythm try adding charcoal curtain panels to your windows, a mercury glass lamp, and gray velvet pillows to your sofa. To create harmony, paint or stain all the woodwork the same color and keep any fixtures or hardware the same. You will enhance your home with the excitement of color splashed throughout the room but the cohesiveness of the woodwork and hardware to create a sense of restfulness; the perfect combination.
