What's the Hygge lifestyle?

Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is popping up all over my designer-influenced Instagram feed. So I had to know… what IS this new style? After some research, I learned that there’s nothing new to this theory at all. Basically, it’s the Danish way of simplifying and enjoying life. It’s no wonder Denmark is consistently ranked as the happiest country.

Hygge is best described as the “cozy, familiar feeling you get from spending time with friends and family, and creating a sense of warmth in your home, especially throughout the winter months. Hygge encourages you to celebrate the basic pleasures in life and can lead to deeper contentment, feelings of comfort, and a joyful outlook. It’s about focusing on experiences rather than possessions and good feelings instead of material wealth.” -Shared from Rodales.com.

So, how do we incorporate Hygge into our homes and lives to create a sense of warmth, peace, and simplicity?

  1. Add blankets. Lots of cozy, fluffy, thick blankets. Pillows with texture are key, too. Really, anything that makes you want to snuggle up with a good book is essential.

2. Unplug. Turn off your devices. Try setting a rule in your home to go device free after 6 pm. In order to create meaningful, fulfilled relationships we need to set the cell phone and the tablet down. Instead, listen to music, read a book, or play a board game.

3. Light candles. Add a soft, calming ambiance to your home with candlelight. If candles aren’t your thing, create soft lighting with dimmer lights and fairy lights strung around your home. If you have a fireplace, light that baby up, too!

4. Eat comfort food. Enjoy your favorite meal that makes you feel warm and cozy. Mine would be meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Uncomplicate your meals. Use that crockpot you received as a wedding gift. Put a pot of soup on the stove. Take the time that you would spend chopping, dicing, and seasoning to spend with your family and friends.

5. Spend time with your favorite people. Invite your friends and family over for dinner but don’t complicate it. Remember, it’s about spending time together not about spending hours in the kitchen. Host a game night where you put your phones in a basket. Enjoy each other’s company without distraction and stress. Share a bowl of soup or a pot of tea together. Warm beverages create a feeling of comfort and taste even better when shared with people you love.

6. Bring the outside IN. Decorate with fresh flowers and greenery. Add a boxwood wreath above your mantle and potted plants along your windowsill.
