The Top 5 Decorating Mistakes

.) Keeping the same layout year after year. Not only does this cause uneven wear on your flooring from the continual foot traffic, it also means you’re probably not creatively using the available space you have. Pulling your furniture away from the walls or angling them on corners may open up a whole new perspective.

.) Over-sized chairs and tiny wall hangings. Everyone loves a big overstuffed chair. However this means taking up a lot of room real estate as well as the potential of it looking displaced. There are plenty of stylish, comfortable chairs that won’t dwarf your grand piano. Additionally, many people don’t realize that a blank wall can hold large pieces of art. Mirrors, paintings, and pictures can never be too big, especially the often overlooked entryway focal point. The right scale of furniture and wall art will ensure your rooms look proportional.

.) Thinking that accent color means “tan plus blue” or “tan plus green” or “tan plus purple” (you get the idea). Sky’s the limit when it comes to the amount of personality that can be added through color and pattern. If your home contains a beige couch with two brown pillows it’s time to take it up a notch. Whether you mix three different shades of taupe or find that tweed and floral work together beautifully, you can create a dimensional design by mixing and matching. The best (and cheapest) way to start adding color to a flat space is to paint one accent wall.

.) Poor lighting. Light should first and foremost be functional. We call this “task lighting”, meaning you should have a really good reading lamp by your bed. However light should also be used to balance a room. If you have a large sectional without any table or floor lamps, your couch is going to look disproportionate in a room. Whether you have tons of natural light or enjoy mood lighting, accent your furniture according to scale.
