The average living room you walk into will have at least one thing: a sofa. A sofa is normally the large, anchoring piece to a room and is an essential element to any living space. However, a sofa is not something you change every few months when you feel like updating a room.
Fortunately, there is a simple and budget-friendly way to make your living space feel like new. The easiest way to completely reinvent your space is to bring design into your throw pillows. A simple sofa can be transformed from eclectic to traditional in four pillows flat. If you are looking at your living room and want to make a change, here are some easy questions to ask yourself in order to find the perfect pillows:
• “What’s the mood I want to achieve?” Many people immediately jump to color instead of stopping to think of the overall effect they are going for. Traditional, formal, eclectic, or glam- how does your space function? If you are having trouble deciding on the mood because, for instance, your living space space is used everyday by your family but you also want it to feel more formal for company, you can create a different set for each use. Simply switch out the everyday set for more formal throws.
• “What colors would work in the space?” Again, this depends on the mood you’ve chosen. If you are wanting a casual, fun space then go crazy with colors, mix and match fun prints, and layer textures. If you lean towards a neutral coloring, then remember to still keep “layers” in mind. You can create depth and visual interest in a neutral palette by layering different textures and finishes.
• “How many pillows do I need?”
This depends on the size of your couch or sectional. Pillows should be proportional to the size of the sofa. A large sofa can handle a lot of big, plushy pillows while a smaller sofa requires small, tailored pillows. There is no die-hard rule for size, however a good guide is that larger sofas should have 20-22 inch pillows and smaller sofas have 16-18 inch pillows.
• “Am I having fun?”
This is your space. Don’t be afraid to experiment to create a truly unique and refreshing look by playing with different sizes, shapes, and colors.
The best part about pillows is that they are an inexpensive way to completely change your room.
