Sunday Brunch

Writer: Mary Lou Mary Lou

Recently, I had the great privilege of joining a few of my girlfriends at “The Lodge” for brunch. It was unlike anything I had experienced. I mean, the sheer amount and enormous variety of food was impressive. How could anyone truly enjoy EVERYTHING?! I left with a full belly but I still wanted more. I realized it was more than nourishment I was after… I wanted to take the FEELING home. The tantalizing aroma of comfort foods, the wood paneled setting, the no-fuss craftsman style furniture… everything felt like “home.” No, I was not raised in a cabin or even have a touch of lodge in my own decorating style. But, nonetheless, I felt secure, relaxed, and welcome. I learned that this design speaks to me. It feels like a warm hug from a favorite grandparent, the first bite of warmed apple pie on Thanksgiving Day, and sunshine on your face.

Let’s take a look at how to create that indescribable feeling of warmth in your own home.

1. Plaid. This pattern is as classic as they come. The rich colors, often flannel or wool in nature, are sure to create a sense of comfort. Add plaid pillows, throw blankets, and rugs to neutral setting for a quick sense of “ahhhh” during the cooler months.

2. Live Edge Tables. Pine, cedar, and walnut mixed with metal are the perfect pairing for a cabin. The organic nature of the live edge wood compliments the sleek, clean, industrial vibe of the  metal for a beautiful juxtaposition. Add occasional tables with such detailing for an unmistakable lodge vibe. Modernize it, like we show below, with acrylic legs and brass accents.

3. Wood Paneling. Did I just hear you gasp? Deep breathes… stay with me here. I’m not talking 1970’s wood paneling.. I’m talking about a new, modern, totally genius real wood product called Stikwood. It is a revolutionary, naturally created plank with an adhesive backing. You literally STIK it on the wall… see what I did there? For a fresh take, lay the paneling horizontal instead of vertical.  Available in dozens of finishes and textures, changing your room from lackluster to lodge can be done in a day. We recommend taking it in small doses though.. think accent wall.

4. Leather. Obviously, right? The cushy, sink-in, don’t want to move for days kind. Big rolled arms make it even more appealing. If you don’t want to splurge for leather, this faux leather (it’s actually a fabric) is the next best thing. Easily cleanable, warm to the touch, and in-stock at Sauder Furniture and Design studio!
