Out of the Box Storage

Updated: Feb 1

When I hear the word storage I think of a large dark basement filled with dusty boxes heaped on furniture and stacks of bins. White, fluorescent lit storage units also come to mind when they get their once a year visit. That sort of repository may be useful for keeping the clutter at bay, but it doesn’t serve any real utility and it definitely isn’t pretty. So let’s rethink this notion of a cluttered basement and talk about a few ways to bring beautiful, efficient storage to your home.

Placed by the main entrance, a bench can be used to reign in the chaos of shoes, jackets, backpacks, toys, and sports gear. Furnished with decorative baskets or boxes, the bench can be the catch-all of the home and collect the stuff that follows you through the door. Each member of the family can have their individual cubby or area to place things when they first walk in. By making it personal and maximizing function, benches are a worthwhile addition to your entryway.

As of late, chalkboard paint has shown up everywhere. From refrigerators to tabletops chalkboard paint is reinventing what we can write on. Our next tip is to take the chalkboard back to its classroom roots. A chalkboard wall (peg board, cork board, etc.) complete with magnets, clips, hooks, and baskets can be the center for all your home’s papers. One wall to keep track of all the many, many papers every house seems to be buried in and will stop you from stuffing receipts into odd drawers.

A favorite piece around Sauder Furniture is the storage ottoman. Functioning as additional seating, foot rest, toy holder, and table top- one little ottoman can do it all. Some ottomans even have reversible tops that have a flat wooden tray that is ideal for kids to color or eat on. Easily tucked under a coffee table, a storage ottoman is endlessly useful.

Suitcases aren’t a novel concept when it comes to holding things. However, vintage suitcases are a beautiful way to keep seasonal clothing items or décor out of the way. Yet don’t discount your current suitcases and leave them empty. Unless you are traveling every other week, your suitcase is empty most of the year and can be used to hold items that don’t get used every day.

When thinking of storing items don’t be afraid to stash them in plain sight. Not so much a storage solution but storage alternative, this tip invites you to consider that not everything needs to be hidden to feel orderly. Open shelving concepts are becoming more popular and we fully support the idea. Bowls and pitchers are great decorative pieces that can be enjoyed even when they’re not being used, and neatly folded linens or a wooden salad bowl add fun and color to an ordinary hutch.

By elevating everyday items to more than one purpose each item can have its own place in a stylish home. Storage units and pods doesn’t solve the problem of accessibility and functionality, however, good storage can maximize efficient ways of use and design without settling for a basement full of boxes.
