Family Matters

The best designed rooms are both practical and beautiful. However, many families opt for function over style when it comes to common areas that are shared by kids and pets. While it’s not the best idea to have a room of white furniture in a house with muddy dogs and sticky-hand children, the home’s family room can be well designed. The intersection of function and form is our goal for your family’s space.

Let’s talk seating. Leather is probably the best choice for seating as good quality leather is durable and easily cleaned. Leather won’t hold on to allergy-causing dander or pet hair and will last much longer than fabric alternatives. If you want a fun patterned fabric, look for fabrics that are indoor/outdoor. While not as durable as leather, these fabrics will be able to withstand stains and scrubbing a little better. When thinking of types of seating, sectionals are a great seating choice to consider because it provides abundant space and sleeping options. Don’t immediately discount a sectional if you have a small living room. There are so many options in sectional shapes and design that there is most likely a sectional that fits your criteria.

Let’s talk multipurpose furniture. Storage doesn’t have to mean boring tubs. A really beautiful armoire can hide baskets of toys and games. Look for storage in unexpected places, such as ottomans that double as a storage bench.  For another multipurpose piece of furniture look no further than your coffee table. A glass top coffee table is perfect for kids. As a central focus of the room a coffee table should add to the style of the room, and with a glass top, can double as the kid’s craft table or place to eat.

Let’s talk design. A fun way to incorporate the kids into the design of the space is to frame their art. Simple black frames work in most rooms and the art can be switched out anytime for new finger paintings and crayon drawings. In addition to incorporating the kid’s designs,

plush rugs help incorporate the kids’ (and adults) need for a comfortable space. If you’re anything like my family, at least one person ends up on the floor every movie or game night, and a great rug adds color, dimension, and extra seating. If your rug isn’t under any heavy furniture, make sure to invest in a pad to avoid slipping and accidents. While we are on the topic of comfort, no great family room is complete without an abundance of cozy blankets and pillows. If you have pets, a tighter weave is best to avoid rips and runs in fabrics.
