A few weeks after my sister got married I received a phone call. “How do I tell Jeremy he’s not allowed to decorate?” Her half laugh only thinly disguised her horror upon realizing her husband’s ability to create a vignette of soccer trophies. From bathroom towels to bookshelves my sister and brother-in-law had to find ways of blending their two very different styles to create a home they both loved.

Whether you are a couple of newlyweds or a couple of roommates, blending two different designs is never easy. Finding common ground while still expressing individual taste can be a tricky balance of form and function. The first step in design is to ask what this room’s purpose is. Is it an everyday space? Is this room’s primary goal to be comfortable or decorative? Are there focal points such as a TV or fireplace? Once the function of the room has been established you can move on to decorating. The following are six fail proof ways to create a neutral space:
1.) When choosing a sofa, chair, or ottoman leather is the perfect compromise. There are so many color options besides the traditional black or dark brown leather colors you may have seen (think gray or even red), and mixed with the natural durability of quality leather you have a great neutral starting point for any common room.
2.) Just like leather, metallic finishes have the same quality of appealing to just about everyone. A nail head trim is an artful touch without feeling frilly. Look for unique ways to bring in iron or nickel for a polished touch that isn’t too flashy.
3.) Straight leg dining room tables and chairs are a transitional design that everyone likes.
4.) One of the best ways to bring two styles together cohesively is by playing with an objects texture and print. Try complimenting the weight and feel of an object such as the hearty, knotted yarn of one pillow will pair surprisingly well with the softer polka-dotted print of another.
5.) Color can make a big difference in the creation of a cohesive room. Most people can find common ground within the spectrum of grays, yellows, or even Granny Smith apple green. Hot pink or neon orange, on the other hand, can polarize even the most understanding of spouses.
6.) Once you have a neutral foundation, accessorize with items that speak to your common interests or layer a room with different objects that represent each person. Remember that with the right accessories you can do just about anything.

Keeping the foundations of your space neutral allows you to add personality and your unique esthetic seamlessly. For example, a hunter’s mounted deer head can be a great addition to a trendy turquoise wall, or a centerpiece can be created by pairing beautiful crystal candlesticks and a rustic wooden bowl. With an artful combination of styles a room can be simultaneously well designed and an expression of two individuals. Still having trouble marrying two artistic tastes?
