The bedroom might be one of the most personal rooms in your house. Not only do you begin and end each day there but it’s also where you get your shut-eye. In order to make this room feel like your very own sweet-dreams retreat in a house full of kids, pets, and clutter follow these simple steps:

1.) Lighting should be given particular attention. Not only should you have a functional bedside lamp for reading but also consider adding a fun ceiling light or chandelier. Most people opt for boring bedroom lighting and miss the opportunity to bring in personalization and art. Notice the natural lighting coming in through windows as some lined curtains may be needed to keep out early morning rays. Don’t overlook mood lighting with dimmers or candles; the good smell is a wonderful bonus.

2.) Bedding is essential for obvious reasons. Sleep is a cornerstone to good health yet many people don’t purchase a really great mattress or linens. If it’s something you use every day, it is worth investing in. Additionally, pillows should be switched out every few months. Your head is one of the heaviest parts of your body and pillows wear down at surprising rates. If you’re not sleeping well or getting headaches try switching out your pillows.

3.) Heirlooms and family photos belong in the bedroom. Anything that has sentimental or familial value to you is a great way to personalize your bedroom with furniture that might look out of place in another room. Try using objects in unexpected ways, like hanging a quilt above your bed for an interesting a personal headboard.

4.) The bedroom is an ideal place for fun paint color and wall paper. It’s an easy way to bring in personalized style, especially with the limitless options is wallpaper

colors and textures (glitter, velvet, and florals oh my!). Opt for a deeper color than you normally would because it will naturally lend itself to a dark, sleep-inducing atmosphere. On the other hand, a neon yellow or orange may not be the best colors for sleeping as they are energizing colors.

5.) Houses are getting larger which means bigger master bedrooms. If a simple bed and nightstand look like it’s swimming in a big room try adding a media center and seating area. If you’re not into having electronics in the bedroom, nix the TV and add a bench or love seat at the end of your bed to create a welcoming retreat.
